About
Anita Grewal is a Perth-based visual artist whose practice centres on colour; its interactions, its perceptual effects, and its emotional and cultural weight. Born in England and raised in India, she learnt early that colour carries meaning beyond decoration, an understanding that continues to underpin her work.
Holding a Bachelor of Visual Arts from the Australian National University School of Art and Design, Anita works with gouache on Arches watercolour paper, creating abstract geometric compositions where carefully constructed colour relationships generate illusions of transparency, depth and movement. Her practice draws on the colour theories of Josef Albers and the perceptual energy of Bridget Riley, alongside influences from modernist abstraction, science fiction, and South Asian folk and miniature painting traditions.
Before focusing fully on her studio practice, Anita worked internationally as a mathematics teacher across England, India, Colombia, the United States and Germany, settling in Perth, Australia in 2018. Her logical sensibility is visible in the work; grids, ratios, colour sequences, but always in service of something felt rather than calculated.
